Step Up Community Build Program Update

Our Step Up Community Build Program is currently on hold while we evaluate the best way to deliver help to families in our community. Over this period, we’re consulting with partners and stakeholders to improve the program and better address community needs. Our focus is on creating a sustainable model amidst challenges like labor shortages and supply issues, maintaining our commitment to offering the program at no cost to the recipients, and making the application process simple and accessible. Reflecting on the families we’ve supported fills us with pride, and we’re eager to continue making a positive impact when we resume. Stay tuned for updates.

The Algars

In 2020, we partnered with Coast and Beam Architecture to design and renovate an accessible bathroom for the Algar family so they could better support their twin five-year-old girls Keira and Amelia, who have Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder. Both girls are non-mobile, and require assistance with day-to-day activities like eating and bathing. It had been getting more difficult and dangerous for their parents to lift them in and out of the bathtub. The remodelled bathroom greatly enhances safety and functionality for the family, and lets them stay in their home.

The Millers

Corvin Miller is a 16-year-old dealing with tuberous sclerosis and grand mal seizure disorder, a condition that impairs his ability to walk and climb stairs. Corvin and his family received a free renovation, which included a new main floor bedroom, bathroom, and a number of other improvements to enhance accessibility. Led by Horizon, the project became a truly community effort of builders, designers, and subcontractors who “stepped up” to help a family in need.

The Step Up Program wouldn’t be possible without support from like-minded companies in the construction industry who give generously of their time and expertise.
