Renovating a heritage home is an immense challenge. A high level of expertise is required to maintain the heritage aesthetic while adhering to modern building codes and functionality expectations.

Moira TaylorThis period-relevant heritage home renovation focused on expanding and updating the home’s kitchen, adding square footage and features to an undersized galley-style kitchen. It was important to incorporate modern amenities while remaining true to the home’s heritage style and design, ensuring a seamless transition from existing to new.
Details of the Maclure style, prominent throughout the house, were mirrored in the new spaces. Features include large exposed wood beams, extensive millwork with Tudor and Arts and Crafts styling and window seats.
A large kitchen island was added along with more generous counter space. Appliances are stored behind custom cabinetry while countertops, made of white quartz, are designed to look like furniture. Kitchen skylights were also added to bring in more natural light.
The kitchen expansion was also an opportunity to make better use of the home’s space by adjusting the layout. A laundry room and powder room were added. An existing extension was tied into the new expansion to create a cozy family room, where a wood-burning fireplace could be retained. Doors were also added to improve access throughout the home. The addition of an interior connection to the guest room means guests no longer have to enter through the garage.
The result is a luxurious house extension that is virtually indistinguishable from the existing build while enhancing the home’s comfort and livability.
